UBC Scrap Classifications
Be informed about your UBC Class scrap purchases and sales. Some might try to sell you unfilled UBCs as a Class 3, because Class 3 is a higher grade, but being cleaner doesn't make it a different commodity.
​Class I — Clean Can Body Alloys (3004 / 3104)
Composed of 3104 or 3004 alloy scrap used in can bodies. - Must be clean, uncoated, and free from
contaminants such as gaskets and oils. - Residual lubricants limited to £ 1.0–1.5% by weight. - Must
remain dry; preferred in dry vans. - Packaging: bales, high-density bales, or biscuits under 55 lb/ft³.
Class II — Can End / Tab Stock (5182 Alloy)
​Clean skeleton scrap of 5182 alloy, used for can end and tab stock. - Paint or lacquer coating allowed.
- Pre-approval required for acceptance. - Packaging: bales, high-density bales, or biscuits under 55
lb/ft³.
​Class III — Decorated Can Bodies (3004 / 3104 Alloy)
Decorated (painted/spoiled) cans of 3004 or 3104 alloy. - May include 5182 lids; must be clean and
free of lubrication/plastic. - Must avoid moisture exposure. - Packaging: bales, HD bales, or biscuits
under 55 lb/ft³ (bales preferred).
​Class IV — Spoiled Can Ends (5182 Alloy)
​New-production, spoiled compounded can ends made from 5182 alloy. - Lower grade compared to
Class II tab/end stock. - Must be kept segregated and dry; no mixing with other classes.
